Owl Themed Kindergarten & 3’s School Lunches (and a Blogiversary!)

Today is my 2nd blog anniversary! I can’t believe it’s been two years already. It’s been such a HOOT.

To celebrate, here are two cute, little owl lunches:

I made owl shaped pumpkin cream cheese sandwiches. I added googly eyes and used my Food Writers to add wings, beaks, and little owl toes (claws?). I also packed dried cranberries, cheddar sandwich crackers, homemade cinnamon applesauce, and a [partially eaten, shhhh] Little Debbie Star Crunch.

Homemade Lunchables Kindergarten School Lunch (again!)

I made a homemade Lunchable(s) for tomorrow’s school lunch. I packed plain graham crackers, sliced colby jack cheese, sliced and rolled ham, dried cranberries, pickles, homemade cinnamon applesauce, and a cut up Little Debbie Star Crunch. And just in case you’re wondering…yes, I eat a teeny portion of that Star Crunch each time I cut it.

Apple Themed Kindergarten School Lunch

‘Tis the season for all things pumpkin…AND apple! I made a quick batch of homemade applesauce earlier this week. I peeled, cored, and sliced gala and golden delicious. I put them in a saucepan, with a little bit of lemon juice and a few cinnamon sticks, over medium high heat. I stirred them until they broke down. I added cinnamon, a little bit of pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla. When they over adequately tender, I blitzed them in the food processor. That’s it! It made my house smell so autumnal and homey! And my oldest loves it! So, with that and the Apple Pie Oatmeal Cookies I made last week (I froze the batch), I was inspired to make an apple themed lunch for my oldest.

I made an apple shaped sunbutter and apple jelly sandwich. I used Food Writers to add a little red color and I used some of the upper crust to look like a stem. I also packed colby jack cheese, snap pea crisps, homemade applesauce (with a little extra cinnamon on top), an apple cookie, and a squeezy yogurt. I decorated with two little apple cupcake picks.

I guess you could now call me an inCIDER on all things apple. 😀

Small Bites VPK School Lunch

So. Tonight’s dinner was a total and utter disaster. It didn’t even start with the best of intentions. It was doomed. Right from the start. If you follow me on Facebook (www.facebook.com/SprinklesinmyLunchbox), then you know. I mentioned that it involved lamb and a crockpot. That’s all I am willing to say about it. I might barf just thinking about it. **SHUDDER** We ate cornbread and mashed potatoes (homemade, at least!!) instead. I threw some grapes on our plates too, just to take away from all the carbs. I was just so happy to have something edible for my kids to eat, that I didn’t care about what it was.

Don’t even ask me why I bought the lamb to begin with.

It was a baaaaaaaaaaad decision.

Anyways, because of that regretful decision, when it came time to make my Bigs’ school lunch for tomorrow, I didn’t even feel like touching meat. Of any kind. Or food. Of any kind. So I give myself a little leeway on this lunch. It was packed in a hurry. And without much thought. Sorry, Kid.

I made green grape and Colby jack cheese kebabs. I also packed two little cornbread muffins from dinner tonight, some homemade applesauce, a banana, some dried fruit (mandarin oranges, blueberries, banana chips), and two chocolate covered almonds.

Tomorrow’s a new day. Tomorrow, I’ll make good food. Tomorrow, the regretful smell of tonight’s dinner will have cleared.

Can’t wait for tomorrow.

The Great Pumpkin [Lunchbox]

I am one of those people who never finds it too early for pumpkin season to start. Some might call us annoying, others might call us one of their own. I love the start of this new holiday season, and I think September is an appropriate month to bring out everything pumpkin. Dontcha think?

For my Bigs’ lunch at school tomorrow, I brought it allll out.

I made a sliced chicken and cheddar sandwich (Applegate Naturals) with a little bit of mayonnaise. I used a pumpkin shaped cookie cutter to make the shape and used a sharp knife to make the face details. I used my Food Writers to add some color (orange and green) to the pumpkin. I packed carrot chips and ranch dip, seasoned corn (in a pumpkin shaped silicon mold), homemade cinnamon applesauce, and a green (lime) Tootsie Roll for dessert.

I think he’ll love it.

I made the applesauce earlier today. It was SO easy. I didn’t follow any recipe, and didn’t feel I even needed one (it was that easy). Here’s what I did:

Wash and peel (I ate the peels!) however many apples you have (I had about a 10 small ones). Core and slice them. Put them in your crockpot with a few tablespoons each of water and cinnamon. Set on high for a few hours. I stirred it and the apples were so broken down (a good thing), that they mashed all together. Yum. You can also keep the peels on, but my boys aren’t fond of that.

The house smelled like Fall. It was wonderful. And I love an easy recipe.
